Garage door maintenance is key to getting the most out of your garage door. This is a part of your home that is typically used multiple times a day, and on average it is used 1,000 times each year. That’s a lot of use!

Despite this constant usage, most people don’t think about performing proper care and preventative maintenance on their garage door and garage door opener. But it’s important! There are lots of ways you can make sure that your garage door stays durable for years to come, but if you don’t, you may be looking at an expensive replacement just a couple years down the road.

3 Ways To Maintain Your Garage Door

Here are three ways you can better maintain your garage door.

1. Make sure the Hardware is Tightened

Since your garage door is opening and closing so often, hardware experiences a lot of movement and thus can loosen over time. Check the hardware on your garage door now and then to make sure it’s properly tightened and secure.

2. Replace your Rollers when needed

You’ll want to inspect the rollers on your garage door at least twice a year to make sure they are still functioning well. They’ll eventually need to be replaced, usually once every 6-8 years. If you inspect your rollers and see that they are extremely worn, or chipped away, or they have a crack in them, you’ll definitely want to replace them. You can purchase new ones and replace them yourself, or you can have your local garage door repair person come, take a look, and replace or repair them for you.

3. Lubricate your Garage Door and Garage Door Opener

There are a lot of moving parts on your garage door, its tracks, and your garage door opener. It’s important that all of these parts stay well-lubricated and greased if they’re going to last a long time, as they experience a lot of movement, use, and wear over time. You can use a combination of spray lubricant and grease depending on the moving parts you are greasing, and it’s very easy and quick. You only need to do this about once each year.
