Washing your car is a regular part of owning a car. If you don’t wash your car, dust and detritus will build up. Not only will this lower the aesthetic value of your vehicle, it will also lower the monetary value your vehicle. If you let dirt and grime build up on your car, it could actually cause the color of your topcoat to dull and it can cause scratches to accumulate. What most people don’t know, though, is that you can actually cause damage your car if you don’t take certain precautions when washing and cleaning your car. Indeed, there is a right way and a right way to clean your car. Here are the five best DIY car cleaning tips and tricks.

5 Best DIY Car Cleaning Tips and Tricks

  1. Start cleaning the interior of the car before you start on the outside. When you clean your vehicle, you don’t want to clean the outside before you start vacuuming and cleaning the inside. Ideally, you want to vacuum and clean the interior first.
  2. Be sure to rinse and clean your car before you wax. Before you place any wax on your car, you want to be sure to remove all the dirt and dust. You can rinse off much of the dust and dirt with a hose. What you don’t want to do is start taking the dust off with a dry rag – you want to get the car wet first. You could cause scratches if you use a dry rag. Once the car is wet, you can begin applying the car cleaning solution.
  3. Use a cleaning solution that is intended for cars. When you do clean your car, you don’t want to use a solution that is not intended for washing vehicles. For instance, dish soap can be too harsh. So can some other soap solutions. If you were to take your car to a professional car detailing service, like Word of Mouth Detailing, they would use a detergent that is specially formulated for making cars shine. The last thing you want is to use is a solution that dulls your vehicle’s topcoat.
  4. Make sure that you dry your vehicle completely before waxing. Before you apply the first layer of wax, you want to dry your car completely. If you apply the wax before the vehicle is dry, it won’t be as effective. It won’t necessarily ruin the car, but you could be wasting valuable car wax. Ideally, you want to dry every inch of the car before applying any wax. Only when the car is thoroughly dried out can you begin the waxing process.

Don’t let your car sit in the sun after you wash it. After you wash your car and after you wax your vehicle, you want to park it somewhere away from direct sunlight. Direct sunlight could cause the topcoat to dull or become damaged. Ideally, you want to wax your vehicle and then place it in a garage or a covered carport. In the end, you want to wait until the wax is completely settled, which will take no more than a day.
