If it’s a tradition in your family for everyone to do some holiday cooking and baking and it’s also a tradition for you to gain five pounds from it, you’ll want to read this article. Although you might assume that the best way to stay in shape during the holiday season is by not indulging in some of your favorite foods at all, the reality is that you can enjoy eating and still not pack on the pounds in the process.

If you’d like a few tips on how you can do just that, please read on.

Eat Breakfast

No matter what time of year it is, you should always eat breakfast. Not only does it give your body the vitamins and minerals that you need for the day, but it’s a surefire way to give your metabolism a boost too. However, another benefit that comes with eating breakfast during the holiday season is it helps to make you feel full. As a direct result, you tend to do less snacking in between meals.

5 Helpful Tips For Staying Fit and Healthy Over The Holidays

Create a Game Plan

There’s a pretty good chance that you’ve heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” This even applies to finding ways to remain fit and healthy over the holidays. A part of the game plan for making sure that you don’t overeat is that you decide to use portion control and that you also keep a food journal. Sure, it might seem a bit tedious at first, but it’s one of the best ways to monitor how much you’re eating and also when.

Watch what you Drink

Calories don’t only come from fried turkey, casseroles, and tasty desserts. They also come from what you drink as well, especially as it relates to alcohol and soda. Now that’s not to say that you can’t have any of these things. Just make sure that you don’t overdo it. One tip: For every glass of wine, root beer or eggnog that you consume, drink two glasses of water. If you commit to doing this, you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite drinks without taking in thousands of calories in the process.

Don’t Skimp on Exercising

Say that you’re a member of a gym like Fitness 19 and you go there to exercise regularly. However, being that you have a lot of family members and friends coming into town, you want to break up your exercise routine just a bit. There’s certainly nothing wrong with doing that. The key is to find other ways to exercise during your “time off.” You can go walking before breakfast or after dinner, you can work out to an aerobics video, or you can go skiing or ice skating. Just make sure that you make a point to remain active. That way, you won’t have a lot of extra work to do on your body once you do return to the gym after the holidays are over.

Download Some Apps

Thanks to technology, monitoring your caloric intake is easier than ever. All you have to do is download some apps to your smartphone. To read a list of some of the best apps for weight loss, visit Health Line and put “best weight loss apps” in the search field.
