While there are of course far more pressing concerns to worry about in the wedding planning process, the seemingly small matter of choosing, designing and generally putting together the perfect wedding invitations never fails to prove challenging. Like everything else across the board with regard to a wedding, it’s the same once-in-a-lifetime situation where everything has to be both functional and flawless.
As all wedding planners would agree, the importance of the right invitations really cannot be overstated as this tends to be the very first thing by which expectations are set and first impressions conveyed. Send out lacklustre invitations and guests will be pre-programmed to expect a day of equal calibre – wow them with something wonderful and they’ll arrive with much higher hopes.
No pressure there, then.
So with all this in mind, what kinds of tips do the world’s seasoned wedding planning pros offer when it comes to choosing, or perhaps even making, the very best wedding invitations possible…ideally stress-free?
1 – Make a List
Well, prior to getting started with the actual invitations the most important step of all is that of making a list of those you intent to invite and checking it at least a dozen times over. There’s nothing worse than ordering in a bunch of wedding invites of the most stunning quality, only to then realise further down the line you completely forgot to include one or two key guests. While it may sound like something that turns the whole process into a bit of a mundane chore, every last detail of a wedding should be planned and executed in accordance with a checklist – it’s the only way of making sure you get it right.
2 – Leave More Time Than You Need
Whether looking to order in your wedding invites or make them yourself at home, you cannot expect things to go exactly as planned…they rarely do. You might run out of craft supplies, the place you order from may run into some kind of delay or there may be an error or two with the final output – in any and all cases you need to make sure you allocate the time you need, then add a big chunk extra on just in case. And if you don’t end up needing this time, you can use it for something else of importance.
3 – Consider Homemade Invites
Making your own wedding invites these days is something of a dying art, which is a bit of a shame given how important a role it once played in the event as a whole. You can pick up a ton of invites online these days for next to nothing and even have them mailed straight out to your recipients, but in doing so you will find that you surrender much of the control to another party. It’s uncommon to be let down by such services, but at the same time you have no guarantees that they won’t do so. As such, if you really want to keep tabs on the whole process AND come up with a truly personal design, it’s more than worth considering the homemade approach.
4 – Keep it Simple
There’s no iron-clad rule that says your wedding invites have to look as if they’ve just been ripped from the pages of a fairytale, or could qualify for the next Turner Prize. In fact, it’s often the simplest wedding invites that come across as the most elegant well thought out of all. The added bonus of simple wedding invites is that there’s less to go wrong in the creation process, plus they’re largely guaranteed to be infinitely cheaper than those of a more lavish nature.
5 – Request Email RSVPs
Last but not least, it may sound like a bit of a cop-out but if you’re really looking to make the whole organisation process as simple as possible, don’t put yourself in a position where you’re waiting for weeks end, staring at the letterbox and wondering who will get back to you and when. Instead, include in your invitation a request that RSVPs are sent by way of email and don’t be afraid to include a cut-off date by which they need to let you know. By doing so, you could save yourself a pretty huge logistical and administrative nightmare.
On the whole, the most important thing to remember is that despite their importance, wedding invitations are not by any means the most important thing about any wedding day. They should and indeed can be one of the more fun jobs to address, so whatever it is you decide to go with in terms of options, try not to put too much pressure on yourself.
