The plight of the shorter women is one that will only ever be known by those who struggle to hit the five-feet mark even on their tippy-toes. Sure, there’s much to be said for being neat, sweet and petite, but if you’re genuinely a member of the outright short camp, knowing what to do in a fashion sense can be tricky.

Now, according to the experts behind www.bellafashionqueen.co.uk there’s really only one rule to follow – forget all the rules across the board. The reason being that while there’s of course a world of tips and good advice to follow, outright ‘rules’ as to what you can and cannot do are bogus. After all, if the Olsen Twins have taught us anything, it’s that with enough thought, effort and tailoring, there’s nothing you can’t rock the living hell out as a short girl.

So rather than blurting out or preaching any specific rules as such, what follows is a brief overview of just a few essential fashion tips from the world’s leading style gurus. You can follow them all, you can select a few you like or you can ignore the whole lot of them – just as long as you find that signature style for you, it doesn’t matter how you go about it.

7 Essential Fashion Tips For Shorter Women

1 – Try Monochrome

While a single colour outfit with no changes from head to toe can give the illusion of added shortness, a whole bunch of different colours can create a sense of perceived blocky-ness. By contrast, a simple black and white outfit that’s split pretty evenly between a black top and a white skirt (or the other way around) can help achieve the opposite – the illusion of added body length.

2 – Heels Can Help

There will always be those who swear by the demure and subtle nature of three-inch heels, but sadly these really aren’t of much use at all if you’re genuinely looking to add real height. High heels are of course the most obvious of all tips and tricks for short girls – they’re also the most effective by far. Of course it’s crucial not to cross the line into the distasteful or to live in heels you can barely walk in, but a nice high pair of heels or wedges can work wonders.

3 – High Wasted Jeans and Shorts

When looking to create the illusion of added height, the key lies in proportions and the way in which you elongate or draw attention to different parts of the body. In this instance, if you wear pants or shorts that are high-wasted, it immediately creates an illusion whereby the waist is elevated and the legs look longer. Along with adding perceived length to the legs, this can also be a great trick for adding perceived height to the whole silhouette in general.

4 – Yes…You Can Wear Maxi Dresses

It’s a bit of a myth and a fallacy to say that women under a certain height should stay away from maxi dresses altogether. A garment that’s traditionally put the fear of God in so many shorter girls, maxi dresses in the right colours, patterns and styles can look outstanding regardless of your height.

5 – Show Those Legs

If you have the kind of legs to pull it off, it’s never a bad idea to think about going pretty short when it comes to your hemlines. It’s once again a case of not only drawing attention to your legs, but giving them the illusion of added length. Shorter skirts mean more leg on show which can immediately make the legs look longer – thus adding perceived height to your overall frame. Of course there is such a thing as too short, so proceed with care if things get rather on the high-side.

6 – Beware Cropped Pants

Right at the opposite end of the spectrum, cropped pants tends to do things the opposite way to the short skirts mentioned above. It’s the same with all people of all shapes and sizes – cropped pants give the illusion that the legs are shorter than they in fact are and therefore do nothing for perceived height in general. It’s not to say you can’t wear them of course, but you need to be quite careful with them.

7 – Beware Baggy

Last but not least, no matter what kind of shape or frame you have as a short girl, it’s a good idea to step away from anything that’s too baggy and instead embrace more form-fitting clothes. It’s the classic case of anything too loose robbing you of your shape and making you look a little bit like a cube – not in your best interests if you’re hoping to look a little taller.
