There are several common car leaks. Knowing what they are will help you distinguish between what needs immediate attention and what does not.

Car Care Common Leaks You Should Know About

Engine Oil

The first of the most common car leaks is engine oil. Its color can be anywhere from light brown to black. Typically, tiny spots won’t initially be a concern, but it is better to be proactive.

Have a professional trace where the leak is. This could be a serious problem in the long run. Car care dictates that you should gain the upper hand before it goes way out of control.

Coolant

There used to be a time when the coolant, also known as antifreeze, came exclusively in a green, slimy color. Now, it comes in all varieties.

How do you know if there’s an issue? Watch out for its bright shade as well as its sweet candy-like scent. This is usually not a serious problem. It might just be your engine telling you that it is time to add more coolant. However, if it continues especially among old car models, it is time to get a mechanic to go under the hood to figure out the problem.

Transmission Fluid

One of the most common car leaks and a relatively serious concern is transmission fluid. Its color ranges from light red (close to pink) to brown. This could mean that the transmission gasket is failing, which could cause the car to slip or skid.

In other cases, the car might not even move. Leaks of this nature can be attended to by a car owner for as long as you have your manual and have ample knowledge in troubleshooting simple drips. However, when you see the slightest sign of your car slipping or not budging, you might want to get auto repair expert help just to be on the safe side.

Brake Fluid

This is arguably the most serious among leaks since it is harder to spot and its effect could potentially be deadly. The brake fluid is almost transparent. Think of it like clear cooking oil.

Once you observe this leak, bring your car to the nearest car care shop immediately. A brake fluid leak is a serious issue and should be addressed by someone who knows how to diagnose and repair accordingly.

Water

If it is clear, thin, and virtually devoid of slippery properties, it could be just water as by-product of your car’s air-conditioning. While this is not a major problem, if it persists and the volume seems to increase, you might still want to call the mechanic in just to check how things are under the hood.

Car care comes as part of the territory for any responsible car owner. Recognizing common car leaks is a giant step in the right direction. Knowing what they are allows you to respond to the situation accordingly before it becomes a serious problem that requires costly solutions.
