Like the world of fine wines or vintage cars, buying cigars can be an overwhelming task. Are you really getting what you pay for? Who says this cigar really tastes better than that cigar? Isn’t it all a matter of opinion? Yes, but there is also science and a lot of truth to these seemingly mystifying valuations. Well, this little guide should set the record straight for you. Buying a cigar need not be a life-altering decision. Here are a few cigar buying basics for all you beginners out there.

Cigar Buying Basics For Beginners

  1. Be mild-mannered. When you’re starting out with cigars, a lot of people make the mistake of going for the big, strong, intense flavors and then immediately feel like they’ve wasted their money. A lot of high end cigars can be quite full on in flavor for the un-acclimatized palate, so be sure to start with a milder cigar when trying to figure out what you like. Your tastes will develop and you’ll eventually acquire a more refined palate, but until then, start mild.
  2. Don’t spend too much. Jumping straight into the deep end and buying an expensive cigar is never a good choice for a beginner. As a general rule of thumb, the more you pay, the better the cigar is, but there are plenty of decent palatable cigars for under $10 each. The prices go up exponentially, just like a diamond, due to demand and scarcity as well a reputation. So start small, in order to test the water, see what you like and develop your palate a little more.
  3. Buy a bunch. A good way to work out what you like as a smoker is to buy a variety of different kinds of cigars. A sample pack is a good way to work out what you like. Head over to the Cheap Little Cigar online store as it’ll give you a good idea on the massive range and variety of cigars out there. It’s easy to be overwhelmed, but read the descriptions carefully, and buy a bunch of different styles, flavors, strengths and sizes and go from there.
  4. Head to a cigar lounge. Cigar smoking is a social thing that is best enjoyed with other cigar smokers. You’ll learn a lot from other budding cigar aficionados and you’ll get a better understanding of the cigar culture that people are so in love with. Being a part of a cigar community means that you’ll be exposed to more types of cigars, and you’ll be likely to do swaps with other generous smokers in order to sample different names.
  5. Consult a tobacconist. There is no better way to familiarize yourself with the art of cigar smoking than to consult a professional. Their wealth of knowledge and experience will mean you’re not getting any mixed messages and you’re getting only quality products. Shopping online can be a challenge, as you’re never really sure what you’re going to get, but it is becoming more and more popular, even for beginner cigar buyers. Alongside the online research, it’s truly important to consult somebody in-the-know and in person.
