The most prestigious networking certification in the industry which is accepted worldwide is the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certification. Those Network Engineers having an active Cisco CCIE certification are recognized for their expertise in network engineering skills and mastery of Cisco products and solutions. The CCIE communities is well known for leading the networking industry with its deep technical networking knowledge and are deployed in the most technically challenging network assignments.
The CCIE training program continually updates and revises its testing tools and methodologies to promote unparalleled program quality, relevance and value. With its rigorous written exam and a performance based lab, the CCIE program sets the benchmark for internetworking expertise.
In 1993, Cisco introduced the CCIE certification in order to assist the industry in distinguishing the top echelon of internetworking experts worldwide. In the present date, the CCIE certification holders represent less than 3% of all certified Cisco professionals and less than 1% of the networking professionals across the world.
The candidate is required to pass all the levels of the program in order to earn a unique CCIE number assigned by Cisco. Currently the program is divided into seven different areas of expertise or “tracks”.
The CCIE certification does not require any formal prerequisites. There is no requirement for any other professional certifications or training courses. But it is required that the candidate must first pass a written qualification exam and then the corresponding hands-on lab exam. It is mandatory for the candidates to pass the CCIE written exam in order to sit for the CCIE lab exam.
The second step to achieve CCIE certification which is far more difficult is the requirement to pass a hands-on lab examination administered by Cisco. The specific format of the lab is not same across all tracks, but in general the entire duration of the lab exam is 8 hours. The CCIE lab exam requires a candidate to configure and troubleshoot a series of complex networks to given specifications in this limited amount of time.
The candidates are expected to have an in-depth understanding of the topics in the exams and it is strongly recommended that they have three to five years of job experience before attempting the CCIE certification.
