Many people have been working hard to maintain their overall weight. Despite their immense size, cruise ships are still a cramped environment that may prevent us to do less physical activities that we are used to. In general, we need to be more active to maintain our weight. Cruises can be really relaxing and this may lead to temporary sedentary lifestyle. However, most cruises offer us the chance to do work out. It is still possible for use to meet the ten-thousand steps per day goal while we are in cruise. One important thing to consider is to bring our pedometer and walk often through the decks. We can meet more people, enjoy the outdoors and explore the ship by walking for a few hours.

Sometimes, the wind is strong and the weather is bad; so these unfavourable conditions could confine is inside the ship. Alternatively we could explore the interior and walk the stairs often to have continuous exercises. We could do this a few hours each day to get our body physically active. By doing this, we should still have plenty of time to relax and enjoy our time during the cruise. Many cruises ships still support people who seek to have healthier lifestyle, by offering “Healthy Choice” and “Light Cooking”. In many cases, we could be sure that these dishes are lower in fat and calories. We should ask the waitress about available low-calories options on board.

We shouldn’t stick to any special menu that the ship offers. Many low-calories dishes are still tasty enough and filling. They are available in reasonable portion sizes, but we should still watch our portions, because we could still eat a lot. We may ask how specific dishes are prepared and what the ingredients are. Many people find that controlling portions is their downfall during a cruise. It’s no use choosing low-calories dishes if we still eat plenty of them. Alternatively, we could adopt the usual 5-4-3-2-1 diet plan to help us eat in smaller, more manageable portions.

We should pay attention to how we feel when we are eating something. We should eat with clear intention, not just because an impulse to eat. Between bites, we should put down our spoon or fork to let our mind aware of food in our mouth. We need to chew our food well and be aware of its taste. Many people chew too few and swallow too quickly, causing them to miss out the delicate, wonderful taste in each spoonful of food. We could stop eating when we are no longer hungry and if we are already full, then we may already eat too much. Cruises could be really generous with bread and butter baskets, they are packed full with calories, carbs and fat; but still don’t make us feel satisfied. We may need to skip them and go straight to the main course and eat reasonably. This rule also applies during buffet: Choose healthy food that we prefer most and avoid eating too much.
