The anxiety of a first doctor’s appointment can make even the bravest child a little uneasy. It doesn’t matter whether you are visiting an eye doctor or a pediatrician, the word doctor can start a frenzy.

Like me, you have probably experienced the doctor terror in one or many of your children. You can easily ease some of their fears with these simple methods.

Honesty

Tell your child the truth about their exam. Let him know that the shot may hurt, but explain the benefits of getting it. Reassure your child that you will be there to hold his hand through the entire process.

Purchase The Berenstain Bears Go to the Doctor  book to make him more comfortable with the exam process. Also, allow him to play doctor with his stuffed animals.

How To Comfort Your Child Before A Doctor's Exam

Bring an Item of Comfort

For many children having a security blanket with them makes the entire ordeal a lot easier. Let your child grab his favorite toy or blanket to carry along to the appointment.

Allow a baby to suck his pacifier during the appointment, even add a sugary substance to soothe him. Studies show that sucking on a sugary substance before getting a shot has the ability to reduce crying.

Create a Distraction

During the shot process, make your child focus on you instead of the needle. Tell them a joke, hold their hand, or just talk to them as the needle appears.

Rewards

Let your child know just how brave they were during the exam. Continue to praise them, and shift any negative talk to the positive part of the exam.

Also, consider giving them a small reward for being brave, like a sweet treat such as a lollipop or cookie.

Extra note: Increase your child’s level of comfort by selecting a doctor that makes him feel comfortable. Ask for recommendations from other moms or test a few out before committing to one pediatrician.

You are the main way to ease your child’s fears. As long as you remain cool and collected, your child will too.
