Home improvements never ends and if you own a house and you are thinking to sell it in future then you should take the help of cement rendering to increase your property value. Cement rendering refers to the applying of a film of a mixture of sand, brick, or stone on a flat surface to make it look more interesting. Sometimes cement renders also help in weather resistance. Depending on how you want it cement rendering can be coarse or smooth, pigmented or painted, or natural or colored. A flat surface after being rendered is often painted or textured, depending on how one desires it. It is mostly used for exterior walls. However, cement rendering can also be used for featuring an interior wall. You should hire a contractor who can handle this work and do it properly.
Steps To The Right Kind Of Cement Rendering
Cement rendering on both internal and external walls have several functions. They not only help in keeping the walls waterproof but also aid better fire rating and give a better look to the walls using coarse or colored textures. One must make sure that the right background has the right amount of mix. Also, one should keep in mind that the film is applied to the wall the right number of times and in an optimum thickness. Special attention should be given to the process during curing.
Prepare the surface to be rendered: before being rendered, a surface should be made free from particles such as oil, dust, silicon, grease, paint, and other such friable particles. A cement surface should have a ‘dash coat’ before cement render is applied on it. A dash coat is basically a mixture of cement and water, a layer of which is applied on a flat surface for the render to have a grip on it. After the dash coat is applied on the cement surface, it should be kept for at least 24 hours before cement rendering is done. A surface that has extreme absorbent capacities, like that of sandstone requires a process of soaking down before cement rendering is done on it.
Mix the render: Before indulging in cement rendering one should be sure of the finish he wants. Ratios of materials differ depending on whether the cement rendering is for external walls or for interior walls. Render mix ratios are normally for core clay bricks and are by the volume. It is extremely important to use the right kind of plaster for cement rendering. When you measure the materials for mixing you should use the same gauge vessel. Mixing of the materials should be done on a flat surface, always. It could be a board or a cement mixer or a wheelbarrow. Give time to your mixture. Mix it for at least thirty to forty minutes, and if oxides are to be added, then always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Mix all ingredients until the color is uniform. The mix should have a putty-like structure and flexibility so that it can stick to the float when it is applied to the wall.
Apply The Render: If you are concerned about the thickness, you can always keep a wooden batten of the thickness you desire and place it vertically to the wall. This will give you a correct edge to your cement rendering. After this, you can use a steel float to apply the mixture of the cement render. Continue applying the layers of the mixture till you reach the thickness you desire. After the desired thickness is reached using a straight edge such as a metal leveler to scrape off the extra render and use a sawing motion. Then use a steel trowel to smoothen the surface of the mixture. Even after this if you are planning to add more layers, you must do that with a gap of three to seven days, to let them dry.
Finish The Render: the rendering can be finished using several different techniques, depending on the cement rendering finish you desire. You can use the trowel finish, the bag finish, or the sponge or the rough cast finishes depending on your choice.
