Why do you need to set goals for your blog? Or perhaps, why do you even need to set goals for yourself? The answer is simple, goals keep you going.

Setting goals for yourself keeps you motivated, it keeps you on track to accomplishing what you are setting out to do. This is why you need to set goals for your blog, if you haven’t yet. Your blog should have end goals, so you’ll always be on a mission to accomplishing them.

How To Set Goals For Your Blog

So how do you set goals for your blog? Here’s how you can start and how you can keep track of them:

1. Brainstorm and Write Them Down

In deciding what your goals are, you need to give it time to think about what you really want to happen and achieve. Write down all the goals you have in mind. There’s no need to segregate them, just jot them all down on the piece of paper. Goals should be written in present and future tense. It should be affirmative statements.

2. Turning Goals into SMART Goals

Now that you have your goals, it’s time to set them as SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.

  • Specific Make goals specific by answering the 5 W’s (What, Why, Who, Where and What). Goals must not be vague.
  • Measurable Make a criteria on how to measure your progress in attaining the goal. You can set target dates, quotas and criteria of accomplishment.
  • Attainable How do you make your goals come to life? Determine the skills, financial capacity, abilities that you need to attain the goal.
  • Realistic Your goals should be realistic meaning that each goal will represent substantial progress. Realistic goals doesn’t mean you have to keep them low. In fact, setting high and realistic goals will keep you more motivated.
  • Timely Goals should be bound within a given time frame. That’s because you need to have a sense of urgency in attaining them. Pick a date or a given time frame to work on the goal, or simply put, pick a deadline.

3. Think About What Worked

Your SMART goals are not set in stone, you can still adjust them accordingly. Start by analyzing what methods have worked for you in the past. Analyzing your blog’s metrics is also a good way to determine if your goal is really attainable and realistic.

Sometimes, your gut feel will get the best of you. But when setting goals, metrics don’t lie and you have to see what your blog has achieved and what it is capable to achieve. Establish a benchmark so you don’t fall far from the tree.

4. Look Into the Now and the Future

While looking back at what you’ve done for the blog helps you establish a benchmark, you must look into your present and future situation too. What are you trying to accomplish now? What do you want to be in the future?

The thing is, you cannot merely rely on the methods that worked for you. You have to take chances as well. Explore your options and learn from other bloggers. This is how you can find the best ways to achieve your goals.

5. Keep Yourself Motivated and Inspired

Let me tell you this now. Goals are worthless without motivation and inspiration. There’s no driving force inside you to attain those goals or even continue working on them. Keeping yourself motivated and inspired is a necessity and something that you have to do on your own.

There are plenty of ways to do it. Ask yourself, what keeps you going? What pushes you? Envisioning yourself achieving a goal is good motivation for others. Some like to reward themselves for every goal they’ve achieved.

Apart from that, don’t get your to-do list too crowded. Make your daily tasks simple as this is the way to stay motivated.

6. Evaluate

This last tip is what you’ll do after you’ve started your mission. Give it two weeks or a month before you look back and evaluate your progress. Regular evaluation is needed to check if you are on the right track and to see what obstacles are slowing you down.

In any case, whether you’re ahead or delayed in your time frame, celebrate. Celebrate because during those weeks that you’ve been working to achieve your goals, you’ve learned something new. And that learning process is always the best thing you can hold on to in your journey.

Setting goals don’t look challenging, but making the right ones is crucial to your blog’s direction and success. How about you, what goals have you set and achieved for your blog, and how did you do it?
