While it’s wholly unlikely that anyone looking out for the best interests of their family would take on a new nanny without conducting an interview, this doesn’t mean that all interviews are equally effective and beneficial. It’s crucially important to remember that this will be the first and only real opportunity you get to establish the merit of the nanny you’re interested in taking on prior to sealing the deal. As such, the questions you ask could very well make the difference between the nanny you and the family have been dreaming of and a nanny from the depths of your worst nightmares.

Interviewing For A New Nanny – The Key Questions You Must Ask

No pressure there, then.

Armed with the right questions, however, and with a good understanding of what it is you’re looking for, choosing a London nanny can in fact be relatively easy. So, in order to help nudge things in the right direction, here’s a quick look at just a few of the most important interview questions of all that should be asked without exception:

1 – Why Do You Want to Be a Nanny?

This can be a rather revealing subject to delve into to say the least as while there will always be those who are in it for all the right reasons, for others it’s all about the money and nothing else. Most nannies get into the profession because they have a genuine passion for what they do and approach every job with pride. By contrast, others are just looking to fill gaps, line their pockets or keep themselves occupied until something better comes along. Suffice to say, no prizes for guessing which should be avoided.

2 – Tell Me About the Qualities a Good Nanny Must Have

This is where the checklist you should have made prior to searching for a nanny in the first place comes in handy. The long and short of it is that you are looking to take on a nanny that shares your exact views and opinions with regard to what a nanny should do and the qualities they should have. They’ll of course need to be dedicated, passionate, reliable, confident and positive, but it’s always good to hear what else the candidate believes adds to the ‘perfect nanny’ recipe.

3 – Explain a Day in the Life of a Modern Nanny

This follows on from the above question and will give you a good idea not only as to how experienced they are, but also what kinds of jobs they expect they’ll be doing and are willing to do. Whereas some will take you through the whole day step by step, others won’t have a clue and may expect you to explain things to them. And then there will be those that make it clear their daily working day doesn’t involve a great deal at all – use your better judgement to decide which applicants live up to the mark.

4 – Are There Any Kinds of Jobs You Will Not Or Cannot Do?

This is something that’s important to get out in the open right away as the last thing you want is to find yourself with a nanny under your roof who cannot or will not do any given jobs of importance. For reasons of religious beliefs, personal morals or in some cases pure blind laziness, there will always be certain tasks that any given nanny will refuse to do outright. Outline these in advance and you avoid what could be a painfully awkward incident further down the line.

5 – What Are Your Long-Term Goals?

The very best nanny is always the nanny that’s in the game for the long haul and doesn’t intend to high-tail it out of there the moment something better comes along. Good nannies are dedicated and committed to the cause – unless of course all you’re wanting is quick one-time-only temporary service contact, in which case it’s less important. But still, it’s worth asking as those in the game on a temporary basis only are rarely as committed, capable or passionate as the long-term dedicated counterparts.

6 – Why Should We Hire You Over Your Rival Applicants?

Last but not least, it’s always beneficial to have them lay their cards on the table and plead their case in full. Instead of leading the charge with questions, ask them outright why it is that you should take them on above and beyond their rival applicants. If they give you an answer that inspires you and fills you with confidence, you’ll know you’re making the right decision.
