Kochi is the trading centre of southern India. It is an important city in the state of Karnataka and is a historic city that has long association with international trade. Kochi or popularly Cochin is one of the most important cities in southern India. The city is a major trading port and a significant commercial centre in the state of Karnataka. To be  precise, the city’s association with trade is rather long. It is since the 14th century that the international traders started seeing the city as an important trading point. It was the strategic location of the city that lie on the internal trading sea route between Europe, Middle East, and Asia that brought the city into prominence.

The city quickly emerged as the trading centre for exporting fine quality spices. It is amongst the first coastal cities on Indian mainland to receive European colonization. In fact, it is the first city where the Portuguese choose to set their camp at. The famous Portuguese explorer and sailor, Vasco-da-Gama also set his foot in the city, and unfortunately it is in here where he took his last breath. Nonetheless, the Portuguese colonized the region for couple of decades, after which the Dutch took over the reign of the city. A cool interesting fact about the city, it was in order to gain control of Cochin city there was the battle between the Dutch and the Portuguese, which is also the first ever recorded battle that was fought on the vessels.

Later with the rise of Muslim rulers in the regions, the Dutch lose the battle for Cochin to the rulers of Mysore. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, two of the most illustrated Mysore rulers, ruled the city for a considerate time span. The British then defeated the Mysore rulers and thus came into the play. They remained in power till the Independence of India. Following the independence, the city along with Malabar, Travancore, and several small towns and villages formed the state Kerala. Meanwhile, the city still continues to remain the centre of trade and commerce.

Today, the city is one of the most modernized metropolitan in southern India. Yet, it is interesting to see that the city is quite clean, well planned, has moderate traffic, and owns good living standards. It is one of the seven Synagogues in the area which is still in use. It was built in 1567 and is the oldest active Synagogues in the British Commonwealth. The Synagogue is so called because it was built by the Sephardic (Jew speaking Spanish) who are primarily foreigners. Other than being an important religious site, the Synagogue is also a treat to eyes. The excellent architecture of the structure is worth checking out. Plus, it is an excellent monument. Good thing is that the Synagogue is easily accessible. Plus, there are several good cheap Hotels in Cochin that are situated near the Synagogue.
