Currently screening on American TV channel NBC, Running Wild with Bear Grylls has spurred a new UK version called Celebrity Survivor. The show will see comedian John Bishop, Corrie actress Michelle Keegan and Olympic medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill embark on a remote survival adventure.

New UK Bear Grylls Show 'Celebrity Survivor' Announced

On Running Wild with Bear Grylls, survivalist, outdoor clothing icon, ex SAS soldier and Chief Scout Bear Grylls takes one celebrity a week on physically and mentally-enduring journeys to remote locations across the world. The famous faces to team up with Bear include actors Zac Efron, Ben Stiller, Channing Tatum and Tom Arnold, NFL star Deion Sanders and newsanchor Tamron Hall.

Running Wild allows viewers to see inside the hearts and minds of these guests in a very open, honest and vulnerable way, pushing them out of their comfort zones and seeing what they are like in real life when stripped of all the benefits of celebrity,” Grylls said in a press release.

“Ultimately, this show is about taking these stars on the adventure of a lifetime and being alongside them when they discover something new and empowering about themselves and their world. For me, that is always a privilege.”

Pushing celebrities to their limits

With a brand new twist, UK show Celebrity Survivor sees celebrities compete against each other during a gruelling 10-day trek through one of the world’s most dangerous jungles. Only the strongest will be allowed to remain on the show, with one celebrity being voted off as part of a campfire showdown each night.

A source reportedly told the Daily Star newspaper: “This is going to push the celebrities to their limits and make I’m A Celebrity […Get me out of here!] look like a walk in the park.

“But it’s not about strength, it’s about survival, which means brains over brawn.”

McBusted singer Matt Willis and Loose Women presenter Lisa Maxwell will also join the celebs in the competition. They will be tested on their abilities to set up camps and deal with new environments.

Good for the soul

The new UK series follows Bear’s Wild Weekends, which saw the adventurer take Stephen Fry to the Italian dolomites, where the pair made a meal out of the heart and tongue from a deer carcass. Jonathan Ross and Miranda Hart also took part.

The news of Celebrity Survivor comes off the back of Bear’s plans to make a female version of his male-only show The Island. The survival expert was accused of sexism in the show, which saw 13 men trying to survive on a desert island. Interestingly, only one woman (Tamron Hall) features in Running Wild.

“The first season was very much about what has happened to modern man. But we are hoping to do both a man’s version and a woman’s version,” he told The Telegraph. “We haven’t announced anything yet, it’s not official, but that is the plan.”

“The thing is, girls or boys, we all love to kind of unleash a little bit and get mucky. It’s good for the soul,” Bear said.

Filming of Celebrity Survivor is scheduled to begin early next year, with the show to be broadcasted on ITV in April.
