Delta Sigma Theta Sorority came to existence in the premises of Howard University on January 13 1913.It is a nonprofit organization. Its aim is to focus on improving the lives of women and underprivileged members of the society. The organization recruits as its members women who are still in college or have graduated from college. Members are recruited regardless of their race, color, religion, and nationality. However, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority focuses on the needs of African Americans. The organization uses its collective strength, aiming to provide education and improve health care to those, amongst the African-American community, who cannot afford it.
The original Sorority was founded using the Greek alphabets, Alpha, Beta, Gama, etc., and after that chapters were chartered. However, at the 24th National Convention held in Detroit, Michigan from December 26 to December 30, 1956, it was decided by vote, to name chapters by using Geographic location instead of the Greek alphabets. Today Delta Sigma Theta has more than 200,000 members located in the United States, England, Germany, Japan, South Korea, The Bahamas, Jamacia, Bermuda and the Virgin Islands.
The Sorority implements programs to promote mental and physical health, increase awareness and develop political involvement in national and international issues and also to improve the economic development of the African American Community. Delta Sigma Theta conducts programs to teach women to manage their finances and invest in buying an ownership home. They also have programs to encourage healthy eating and gaining health from weight loss.
Delta Sigma Theta is the first and largest African American Greek lettered organization founded by the black women, for the black women in the United States. However, now the organization has women as members belonging to all races. The national body of Delta Sigma Theta meets every two years and the regional bodies meets in the years when the national body conventions are not held. The Motto of the organization is to spread the light of intelligence among different levels of the society. It is a member of many organizations like NCNW (National Council of Negro Women) and NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) The organization consistently collaborates with big corporate organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Lawry”s, Chase bank, Walmart, General Electric and Coca-Cola to help with its future goals.
Delta Sigma Theta introduced a five point program in 1955 which include:
1 Development in Education.
2 Mental and Physical Health.
3 Development in Ecomonic.
4 Political alertness and involvement.
5 Contribution in International Awareness
Leaders and committees are formed to coordinate and implement this five point program.
On 27 March 2003, the volunteer service and helpful efforts around the world, Delta Sigma Theta developed into a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
Delta Sigma Theta believed that Black women were subjected to racism. They believed that blacks needed the right to vote and protect themselves from Racism and Sexual exploitation. They believed in equal right to Education and employment in the work force. Their projects included improving opportunities for black women to get jobs.
By 1953 in Washington, D.C., it was the sorority focused on the African American community to obtain a national head office site. Then in 1972, the organization moved its headquarters to New Hampshire where all records and equipment to run the organization is kept.
Delta Sigma Theta together with Chase bank and Genworth Financial were responsible in getting many members a dream house of their own. They also built many homes for the black old age people. Delta Hurricane Katrina Relief Task Force was created to counter national disaster after the havoc created by Hurricane Katrina. Delta Sigma Theta has proved a blessing for African Americans.
