Operating a bulldozer is necessary for most construction projects, but it requires many considerations for safety purposes. With the enormous size, power, and capability of bulldozers, you can expect serious injury and even death when safety protocols are not considered.

Knowing more about safety considerations and ensuring operators keep them in mind are the two priorities of construction managers and firms. Here are some safety considerations when operating a bulldozer.

Safety Considerations When Operating A Bulldozer

Considerations for Workers and Operators

Assessing and training the operators assigned to manage the bulldozer are important. The people operating and riding the bulldozer should be qualified, competent, and trained.

The worker should have great familiarity with the safety mechanisms built-in the bulldozer. As much as possible, they should have experience operating a bulldozer beforehand. Alternatively, they should be trained in a type of apprenticeship program before operating a bulldozer alone.

For example, qualified workers should be able to test if the manual warning device or horn of the equipment works prior to operation.

Aside from competence, bulldozer operators should always use their seatbelts while on the job. Other protective gear such as vests, hard hats, and proper clothing should be observed as well.

Workers, even those who are not directly operating the bulldozer, must follow proper lockout, black out, and tagout procedures. These are especially relevant when the bulldozer is in need of repairs. Both workers and operators should know not to climb on parts of the bulldozer where hand and foot holds are not provided.

Considerations for the Workplace Environment

Bulldozers generally operate in a construction site that can range from moderately to extremely busy. Keeping people out of harm’s way is possible with the right safety considerations.

For example, the engine of the bulldozer should only be ignited when the path ahead is absolutely clear of workers and other obstructions. Workers on the ground should know how to act around an operating bulldozer. This requires a system of traffic controls to prevent any collisions and potential flaggers in place of warning signs when needed.

The bulldozer should also be operated in areas away from overhead power lines, which can be a source of grave accidents as well. Caution should be exercised when operating near trenches or excavations.

Considerations for the Bulldozer Equipment

The rented or acquired bulldozer should meet safety standards. Features such as the manual warning device, brake, engine shut-off, and rollover protection structures (ROPS) should be functional. The bulldozer should have an automatic back-up alarm that can be heard throughout the whole construction site.
