Software testing is the important procedure used to appraise the competence of a program to do the job it is intended for. Reporting is part of this software testing procedure. It involves the entire process of probing a program or system concentrating on finding errors, examining security and determining the excellence of the computer software. Valuable software testing relies on a wide range of knowledgeable techniques in relation to reporting problems in the software. The purpose of reporting in software testing is more than just fault finding, it comprises a number of aspects such as quality assurance, and verification that it will not let anybody down in the future. Once the software is on the market any design defects or bugs will remain with the program for its lifespan so it is paramount that reporting takes place.

As software testers implement a program during a testing activity, if a failure in the software is observed, testers will report the particulars of that failure in order to classify which defects that hints to that failure. A defect log report should comprise all of the essential data, and this evidence should be detailed enough to be able to find the root cause of the failure.

The Importance Of Reporting During Software Testing

Typically, there are Two Ways of Reporting Defects, Informal and Formal

Informal Reporting:- This means that sharing the details of a failure with the developers one to one. It does not comprise the writing of a detailed log report to or inform the about the issue. This way of familiar reporting is customarily carried out before the formal testing cycle occurs, and is commonly known as buddy testing. There are positive benefits in the casual way of reporting defects in that it saves time in the software development cycle. More time can then be put to more use in essentially fixing the defect. Reporting in this way helps in fixing the flaw swiftly.

Formal Reporting:- The formal way of reporting defects is generally done by a testing team during the official testing phase. If an outcome of a test step does not match with a probable result then there is a deviancy of the correct workflow and the topic needs reporting. As reporting occurs and defects are found they must be recorded in every detail and steps they executed to find the defect clearly defined. Reporting in this way is invaluable for systematically discovering faults in a software program. It enables very trace of the process to be observed so if that has been something missed then it can be uncovered.

The process of reporting in software testing is undeniable at helping to fix any potential flaws in programs. It allows developers to share information and come up with new and innovative solutions that can make the software perform to its full capacity. It also works as a great communication tool.

Reporting during software testing is important on a number of levels and is a necessary part of the entire process of testing.
