The Lowdown On Rum

Until recently, people thought of rum as a bit of an old fashioned drink, however it has suddenly become more popular, and the sales are continuing to rise. As recently as 2013, rum was more popular than vodka at the end of the yearly sales period, which shows just how popular it is becoming. Not only is plain rum increasing in sales, but also things like spiced rum, which has rocketed in popularity in recent years.

When you are first asked to think about rum, there is every chance that your brain will conjure up an image of pirates on a ship, drinking the highest strength rum from a bottle. While this is the type of thing that sailors may have drunk in the past – for warmth as much as anything else – it is now more popular as a cocktail ingredient. In the 1930s, bars in the Caribbean first discovered it and started adding it to the drinks that they were making. Since then, it has been adopted as an ingredient all over the world, and now there is practically nowhere that doesn’t know how it is used.

Rum has huge sugar content, and is in fact made from the actual sugar cane itself. The rum can be made by fermenting sugar in a copper pot, and the method of creating it now isn’t far away from how it was created when it was first discovered as a drink. There are a huge range of rums that are available to buy, and just a few of them are described below.

Dark Rum

This is made from sugar, and then aged for a number of years before it is used. This is done in barrels that have been charred, which can add to the flavour of the drink. The flavour of the liquid can then be changed by adding things like spices to the mixture.

Golden Rum

These are aged in wood barrels, and this is how they gain their colour, which is a caramel hue. The barrels may be ones that have been used in the past for bourbon whisky, as this can add to the flavour, too.

Spiced Rum

Adding spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg can bring a huge explosion of flavour to the rum. You can also add a caramel flavour if you want to bring a sweeter taste to it, and that is something that many people like to enjoy.

White Rum

Instead of being aged in a barrel, this type of rum is aged in a steel vat. This is only the case where aging is bothered with at all – some can just be bottled straight from being made.

Because of the fact that there are so many different kinds of rum available, it is certain that you will be able to find one that suits you completely. It can definitely be a lot of fun to try out the different types that are available to choose your favourite – and there is no time like the present to make a start on that!
