Divorce is a difficult and tough time for the couple involved. It can be a messy process where the reality of someone getting hurt is unavoidable. The process becomes more complicated and can be difficult to deal with when children are involved. Sometimes it is even the fear of hurting your children that made you stay longer in an unhappy marriage.

Ways You Can Be The Best Parent During A Divorce

Getting a divorce doesn’t change the fact that both of you are parents. Now is the best time to show them that you are still there for them, and that they are still cared for and loved by their mother and father. Here are 5 ways you can be the best Mom or Dad to your kids in this difficult time.

Opt for a mediation instead of a litigation.

If co-parenting is still on the table, then choosing a collaborative approach can make the process easier. By choosing mediation, you lessen your children’s exposure to pain and anger.

As much as you do not like your soon-to-be ex-spouse, focus on being parents first. Make a parenting plan that you mutually agree on. This will help your children have a smoother transition to their new family setup.

Help your kids manage their feelings.

It is a time of tumultuous emotions for the adults. How much more for the children? Don’t down play what your children feel at this moment. Sit down with your children and encourage them to say what they are feeling and thinking. It can be positive or negative, but the important thing is that parents should be able to separate it from their own feelings.

Children often feel a sense of loss during divorce, and they may blame their parents or themselves for what is happening. Reinforce the idea that both of you love them, and that the problem are between you, the parents, and not with the children.

Protect your children from unnecessary drama and conflict.

Never let your children see you fight or argue. Never speak badly about your ex-spouse to your kids. You have your adult friends for that. Do not use your children as messengers to your partner. Doing so will only add to the stress and confusion that your children feel.

However, do not sugarcoat the situation.

If the other parent falls short of his or her responsibility, do not make excuses. Your child must have the chance to express how he truly feels. Let your child do so without you saying something negative about the other parent.

Take good care of yourself.

You cannot be a good parent if you don’t take care of yourself. You may be stressed out or emotionally hurt, so allow yourself some relaxation and a little fun. If you feel good about yourself, you will feel more positive when you are with your children.

Going through a divorce can be emotionally and mentally tasking. Get help from a reputable family lawyer who will help you and your family with the whole process. A good family lawyer can help make the process amicable and peaceful for you.
